Magpies win grand final berth

Joe Davidson

The top local AFL teams met on the weekend in the second semi, which saw the Tweed Coast take on Byron at Ballina – the Magpies booked a place in the 2013 Grand Final after defeating Tweed Coast Tigers by 40 points on Saturday afternoon.

Byron have earned a week off and head into the premiership decider on August 17 with confidence on the up.

Despite missing the league’s best and fairest Kane ‘the punching bag’ Bullock, it was a great first half and Byron gained the advantage. The score at the half-time bell was 5.3.33 to 2.6.18.

The second half was hard-at-it footy on a boggy oval, which saw tempers flare between the two sides. The Byron midfielders put their bodies on the line repeatedly to win the football out of the centre and send it forward.

Tweed didn’t seem to have enough legs in the final quarter as Byron pushed ahead, though they felt the pressure down in the backline. In the end, the Magpies were too good on the day – the final scores: Byron 13.12.90 to Tweed 7.8.50.
