A pop-up community lunch was held at Heritage Park in Lismore yesterday to mark the completion of works aimed at keeping the area litter free.

Lismore City Council received $25,000 from the NSW Environmental Protection Authority’s Hey Tosser litter education program to implement waste management strategies in the park.

This has included installing new recycling bins and bin enclosures, educational signage, and butt bins on the park’s perimeter so people can butt out before entering the park.

‘The new recycling bins are a great step forward. They will allow us to recover more valuable resources and keep waste out of landfill,’ Lismore council’s waste education officer Danielle Hanigan said.

‘We thought a litter-free lunch was the perfect way to let the community know about these new measures in a casual and friendly way,’ she said.

The day included  a sausage sizzle and activities for kids as well as messages around keeping  public spaces litter-free.

Mayor Jenny Dowell took the opportunity to show off another initiative of the council’s … an electric car powered by the sun.

Cr Dowell said Lismore was attempting to lead the way in measures aimed at reducing the city’s reliance on outside energy sources.
