Police will resume the search for a man reported missing after the discovery of a distressed dog on a kayak floating on a Gold Coast canal yesterday (Tuesday February 2).

The 31-year-old kayaker set out for a paddle with his pet dog about 7am (AEST) at Broadbeach Waters.

A woman walking along the shore spotted the dog on the kayak on the canal about an hour later and alerted police.

The kayaker was reported missing and a major air and sea search launched along the canal.

There has been no sign of the man who suffers an unspecified medical condition.

Police suspended the search late Tuesday afternoon but will resume it at first light on Wednesday.
