Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Well done guys, another Men’s Shed for the Northern Rivers. I was behind one of the first, in Murwillumbah where after being involved in the first mobile mens shed in Australia, I figured us men need a fixed shed. If at that time we got a shed, we’d be the first in Australia, I had mates in Sydney about early 70’s where we would get together and do projects. Its a great thing for men of all ages. I had always the idea of teaching unemployed youth some skills to make them more employable. One day it may happen. Im presently visiting Europe and looking at different building products etc. Very interesting. Cheers Maddog

  2. Hear hear Maddog! A lot of men have difficulty adjusting to unemployment or retirement, or just want some company – the sheds really fill a gap. I’ve been in one in Canberra for about six years. A lot of peopel think they are all about workshops and crafts but a lot more can go on around them. Being nainly retired or redundant public servants and military we don;t actually have a workshop -we have lots of meetings instead, drawing on the wealth of interesting speakers from among our number and from ’round Canberra. The shed does excursions, has IT, coffee, cycling and walking groups, and teaches Meccano to local boys Each place needs to work out what interests and works for the men in its area.
