The Bay Rollers’ return to the Cavanbah Centre on September 9 saw them lose convincingly  to the visiting Northern Brisbane Rollers Team Phoenix 315–89.

The Bay Rollers could not find the composure that saw them beat North Brisbane this time last year.

The Byron Sirens, as the Bay Rollers’ travel team is called, had strong hopes going into the game but these were dashed early as the jammers struggled to break through the tight defence of Team Phoenix.

Jammer Nikki Nitro managed to score well in the first half to keep the Sirens in the game but they were still off the pace by 50 points.

Coming into the second half, the Sirens’ jammers and blockers acquired a lot of penalties meaning they had to serve 30 seconds in the penalty box each time. When your jammer is in the penalty box in roller derby, it means that you’re unable to score.

In the end Team Phoenix came out on top with a convincing win.

Overall a good learning experience for the Sirens as they head to the Tropicarnage Queensland Derby Tournament over the coming long weekend.

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
