A former stalwart behind the annual Byron Lighthouse Run, Barbara Pinter, has been praised for her longtime commitment to the fundraiser as it celebrates its tenth anniversary later this month.
Known as ’The Pink Lady of Byron Shire’, Barbs, as she was affectionately known, passed away earlier this year and organisers of the run are keeping her memory alive for the event on Sunday, 23 October.
‘This shire has seen many movers and shakers and one of those was Barbara Mary Pinter, founder of Byron Breast Cancer Support Group (BBCSG) in 2004,’ a spokesperson for the group said.
‘Barb’s drive was to raise community awareness and funds to assist women and their families experiencing Breast Cancer,’ she said.
‘Barb promoted awareness of early detection and freely delivered not only a nutrious meal to families in need but clever activism on a grassroots level.
‘She was a passionate activist pursuing a more peaceful and fair society. A society where we consciously”take time out, breathe, eat in the garden and be grateful for the planet we live on (reminding ourselves that we only have board passes – everything’s on a loan basis only).
‘Barbara was there from the beginning 10 years ago, liaisoning with co-odinator of run, Lisa Parkes-Jetha.
‘BBCSG would ‘pink up’ and walk to the top. Barb initiated the post run massage tents.
‘This year Alstonville Osteopathy are conducting the massages. $10 for 10 minutes with all proceeds going to Beyond Blue.
‘The night before the run, the lighthouse will be radiating a pink light and the BBCSG will be at the event with there pink table, merchandise and pink ladies.’
Every Year the LighthouseRun(www.byronrun.com) raises money for cancer. This year the money raised is being used to purchase a special Breast Prone Board for Lismore Base Hospital, to enable patients to be in a different position, avoiding radiation exposure to major internal organs.
‘Barbara’s name will be embossed on the Breast Prone Board in recognition of her tireless advocacy,’ the spokesperson said.
