Steven Conran was the professional winner of the Australian Schweppes Asahi Tour Championship 2016 played for the tenth successive year at the Byron Bay Golf Club earlier in December.
‘The course is in tremendous condition, and I really enjoyed the challenges it presented throughout the week,’ Conran said.
‘My strategy all week was just to stay out of trouble and thankfully it paid off’.
Richard Backwell and Brad Burns tied for second place.
‘Steven played for many years on the Japanese tour and has only recently been eligible to play the Legends events, so let’s consider him a rookie,’ BBGC pro Greg Stewart said.
Peter Senior was looking good before he succumbed to the same hip injury that caused him to withdraw from the Emirates Australian Open a few weeks ago, and subsequently retire from international golf.
The winner of the three- round amateur event was the GGCG club champion Mat Crandell.
Amateur golfers travelled from as far as the central coast of Sydney to compete in the event.
BBGC Captain Pete Sinclair thanked all the club’s volunteers for their help prior and during the event as well as the sponsors who have supported this fantastic event year after year.
‘The Byron Bay Golf Club continues to provide one of the best country golf courses in Australia, one that the club members are very proud of,’ he said.
