Mandy Nolan’s Soapbox: Why Being Seen is Beautiful

There is something profound about being seen. Being accepted and loved for exactly who you are. It’s life changing. It’s simple. It’s transformative. But some people don’t get to experience this. Nearly half of transgender Australians have attempted suicide. That data tells the very real impact of discrimination, stigma and lack of access to gender-affirming surgery. I write this as a woman who was born a woman, who identifies as a woman. I’ll admit, that even in that gender role, that fits within the societal binary, I’ve had my own challenges.

A seasoned bard

Guy Kachel had an idyllic entry to the world of music. Born in Tamworth, he was raised on the banks of the Peel River. The landscape was a fertile ground for his imagination. Seeing this rustic world change, as Tamworth developed into an inland city and friends grew to sometimes troubled adulthoods, provided insights for the artistry that later powered his career as a performer.

The Mullumbimby Giants rugby league club is ready to get back on the football field in 2017 and will mark its relaunch with a star-studded Sportsman’s Lunch this Friday at the local Leagues Club.

League greats Laurie Daley, Paul Sironen, Graham Eadie and Danny Buderus will all be special guests.

Neil ‘Bing’ Pringle is master of ceremonies and NSWRL chief executive David Trodden will be there too.

‘The luncheon is already fully booked. Interest was immediate as soon as flyers were posted and it did not take long to fill to capacity. The quality of guest speakers has certainly added to that interest,’ organiser Steve Butler said.

‘We would like to thank Dave Trodden for his assistance in arranging the speakers for the day. When he heard of our situation he could not have been more helpful,’ he said.

Daley, the current NSW State of Origin coach will also be running a junior skills clinic from 10am this Friday at the club, while he is in town.

The Giants had to have a year’s break from the NRRRL in 2016 because of a  lack of players, but have been working hard to amend that situation.

The club has appointed a new committee to ensure its return in 2017, and player numbers have been encouraging.

Prior to Christmas the club had three informal training runs attended by approximately 30 players.

Since January 17 the club has resumed official pre-season training and numbers are slowly building. The club now trains Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

We just love him!

If you’re over 50 you might not be a fan of Tom Jones, but you can bet your mum is. If you’re under 40 you might not even know who he is, but your grandmother probably wet her pants at the mere mention of his name.

Peter Garrett gives Bluesfest the nod

If I say the words ‘US Forces give the nod’, I can pretty much guarantee that you will hear the unmistakable voice of Peter Garrett ringing in your ears. Your head may even start to bob up and down a bit.
