Mullumbimby district and neighbourhood centre (MDNC) has been coordinating disaster relief for Byron Shire.
‘The generosity of the people here is so wonderful,’ said Community development offices Leseera Kai.
‘We have had so many donations we’ve been able to send at least two bus loads up to Burringbar and Wooyoung that have also been decimated by the cyclone.
‘People have been so generous I’ve almost cried.’
Since the Cyclone hit the neighbourhood centre has been providing around 100 hot meals a day to locals.
‘We don’t get any funding for it,’ said one of the voluntary chefs.
‘Local businesses have been amazing and donating all the food we are preparing for people.’
The Salvation army has been working along side the neighbourhood centre providing flood relief vouchers for cleaning products, food and petrol.
Assistance is also available to fill out forms for flood assistance as well as counselling and emotional support.
They have been working with council who have ensured they have access to the Civic Hall to help provide access to and sort donations.
Need Furniture?
Furniture donations are being stored at the Mullumbimby railway station and people are able to source beds, couches, tables, chairs etc. Otherwise you can contact Byron Shire helping hands on Facebook who are also linking people who need furniture with those donating.
Donations of money or vouchers for food and petrol, $20 to $30, are needed to help support locally affected flood victims.
