The Hockey Clubs Susie Hope said that they had been told that Council had been unable to attract a suitable tender for upgrading the grounds. The Hockey Club will now be able to stay at the Byron Rec grounds for this season. Ms Hope viewed the decision as a welcome reprieve, and said the year should be used to review the future of all sport in the Shire on a long term basis. With regard to the possibility that facilities may be built at Ewingsdale near the Industrial Estate, Ms Hope said that rather than spending half a million dollars upgrading the Byron facilities which may only be used for a few years, careful thought should be given to maximising the benefit for all sports from Council spending. Councillor Jan Barham has proposed incorporating an audit of sports groups and needs in the Cultural Plan for Byron to provide a basis for longer term planning. Ms Hope said that she would also welcome the formation of a Byron Bay Sporting Association to give all sports a stronger, co-operative voice to promote the future of sport in the Bay.Aussie Rules Byron MagpiesByron Bay has one of the strongest clubs in the Summerland AFL, and with the season commencing in April, the Magpies are inviting past, present and prospective players and their families to meet the coach Billy Smith at a family BBQ day at Belongil Beach first carpark on Sunday January at 1pm. Bangalow 8 d Alstonville .Both teams fielded just about their strongest combinations resulting in a see sawing match with some fine individual performances. Bangalow batted first but didnt get the start they were hoping for with the loss of early wickets although S Milenko was batting well before being dismissed for . D Wright looked as if he was set for another big inning hitting the ball well but was dismissed at a crucial time for . S Singh came in at number 7 and his innings of no gave Bangalow the opportunity to put a competitive total on the board. At 6 for things looked bleak but at 7 L Cook came and gave another of his valuable cameo innings and with Sunny took the score to for 8 before he was dismissed in the 2nd last over. Alstonville began their innings confidently after the loss of an early wicket and looked to be on top but with the intro of B OMeara 4 the game swung Bangalows way. Brendan bowled extrememly well and with Rob Parkes 3 bowling his darts and tying the batsmen up, Alstonville fell to for 9. Winning the toss, skipper Dean Files chose to bat on a pretty good Thompson Oval wicket. Batting out the overs saw Mullum Bruns finish with 9 for , with Ross Graham the stand out batsman, scoring after retiring hurt with a torn hamstring on and later returning to bat when needed. Dean Files , Bryce Kylie , Nathan Simpson and Al Butler all kept the runs flowing as well. Tintenbar found themselves up against a white hot fielding side and with Mitch Loane 3-9 off 9 overs leading the bowling attack, never seemed in with a chance of chasing down the total. Brad Mott got 2 wickets for off his 9 overs, while all other bowlers shared the remaining 5 wickets. A fine win against last years premiers to keep the team in the finals race. Next weeks team is in the scoreboard section. Third Grade Mullumbimby Brunswick took on Alstonville Rugby in a one day match at Mullum Rugby Ground. Mullum Bruns cruised to an easy victory in a one sided contest. Batting first, Mullum Bruns scored 8 for . Peter Bushby top scored with , ably supported by Mark Hogan , Scott Hogan and Rohan Johnson . In reply, Alstonville Rugby could only manage with Kev Meehan 4- off 9 overs and Matt Hardy 4-9 off 6 overs being the destroyers with the ball. Fourth Grade Mullumbimby Brunswick hosted Ballina Bears at Lofts oval in the first day of a 2 day match. Deciding to bat after winning the toss, Mullum Bruns managed against the Ballina attack. Wade Kelly , Kris Rummery and Danny Buckley were the only batsmen to worry the Ballina bowlers. Ballina sent into bat finished the day at 4-, needing only runs for a first innings win. Wickets so far went to Danny Buckley 1-, Wade Kelly 2- and Kris Rummery 1-.1st SAT Bruns Hds. 1st SUN Byron Bay . 1st SUN Lmore Car Boot . 2nd SUN The Channon. 2nd SUN Lennox Head. 3rd SAT Mullumbimby. 3rd SUN Uki . 3rd SUN Nimbin . 3rd SUN Lmore Car Boot . 3rd SUN Art from Heart. 4th SUN Bangalow . 5th SUN Nimbin Market .
