Byron Shire EchoLocal NewsUrban design awards a firstThe

northern rivers

is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. By it is expected that a quarter of Australias population will live between Coffs Harbour and Fraser Island and the Northern Rivers is smack bang in the middle. How does a region with such growth pressures manage the quality of urban development The Northern Rivers now has a forum to encourage and celebrate excellence and appropriateness in urban design, a vital step according to industry representatives. Mayne Investments and the Northern Rivers Regional Development Board have partnered to develop the Northern Rivers Urban Design Awards which, according to Chair of the Development Board Ian Oelrichs, are aimed at encouraging excellence in urban design and innovation in building and development practice in the Northern Rivers. According to Byron Shire Mayor Jan Barham, The north coast is a beautiful natural environment that deserves to be complemented by sensitive, smart buildings. We are ideally positioned to nurture a development industry that is at the forefront of sustainable building practices. A forum that encourages and celebrates this is a great step forward. Entries are currently open and relate to both commercial and governmentnot for profit urban design projects. A panel of respected industry judges supported by local community leaders will consider criteria such as design excellence, functional quality, environmental responsibility and sustainability, and the promotion of biodiversity. Submissions for the awards close September 1, with the Awards Ceremony being held on September 8.
