Echo July , Letterscity crowds, are inspired by love love of music, of dance, of community, rather than love of money. We have lost so much. Up the evolution.Jim NutterMain ArmHuman activityIf it can be shown that

global warming

is caused primarily by human activity it will mean gazillions for the nuclear and carbon trading industries. When a leading economistbanker Stern and Rupert Murdoch go green there has to be nancial prot in it. My opinion is that, during the ABC TV discussion of the global warming swindle, there was only one relevant question asked from the audience the majority of the rest were statements, not questions and the asker was cut short. The question was about population growth. I thought it was alogical question. If we are having problems now with six billion then wont CO2 be much worse at nine billion Or billion Will nuclear power and carbon trading be able to keep ahead of exponential population growth If the human component is the cause of global warming, shouldnt governments be targeting the cause rather than the effectever far behind All that time we had a moratorium we could have been setting up new energy efficiencysustainability requirements for all new developments. What a pity. And very interesting to note the strong afrmative language coming from the ministry about the serious threat from climate change. especially in light of that criminally farcical documenPeggy Balfour tary Swindle that was aired Mullumbimby on ABC this week. Even if this is over needless and tragic death of years too late, its a start. a baby humpback whale at I do wonder if the US has Cabarita Beach and this moved its overconsumptive week the Byron Whale Collective will be holding feet on anything like this Are we in green Byron memorial ceremonies atCabarita and also at her burial ground, near the lighthouse in Byron Bay. We are still seeking answers about her death and still waiting for the open, transparent review that National Parks and Wildlife Area Manager James Law promised last August. Mr Law stated that all interested parties would be invited to take part in such a review but it seems that the best the department has been able to do so far is to review its equipment. Indeed, if it had used the equipment necessary to support this small whale while she lay for hours slowly suffocating under her own weight, her suffering would have been greatly relieved, however a review of equipment will not placate the collective. Our questions as to why a perfectly healthy whale was not immediately returned tothe sea, removed from the tide onto dry land and let deteriorate remain. This act breached National Park guidelines, even her death by lethal injection was a breach as she could have and should have, according to department guidelines, been rehabilitated. A year is too long a wait for these issues to be dealt with and we will be inviting national and local media to attend the memorials at which press statements will be issued.Ashiya AustinSea Shepherd Conservation Society Byron BayWater planningI would like to thank Richard Staples for his Rous Water delegates report in the July Echo. I have long been concerned at the absolute lack of accountability to the local community fromRous Water. Cr Staples has convinced me that the community should be equally concerned that their elected representatives are having no input to water policy. This situation is just not acceptable and needs to change. About ve years ago, we ran out of water after just a few months of low rainfall. The Northern Star viciously attacked Rous Water for their lack of planning. The claim was made that our dam was built around to supply water to a fraction of the population it now supplies. The problem was not climate change or consumer irresponsibility. It was simply that the dam was too small. Rous Water responded that plans were already under way to lift the height of the Rocky Creek Dam wall and build an additionalcontinued on page
