School art on display

Art features strongly throughout Bangalow Community Children’s Centre so it was very rewarding when a canvas painted by the children in the west room won the NAIDOC Week competition for canvasses depicting Aboriginal unsung heroes.

The winning canvas, which has been on display throughout the Northern Rivers as part of a NAIDOC Exhibition, will be back in Bangalow and on display at the BCCC’s annual art exhibition, Imagination, on Friday July 23 from 7pm at the A&I Hall, along with artwork from the children at BCCC and other artists.

The children have been learning about Aboriginal activist Vincent Lingiari through the song, ‘From little things, big things grow’, and a story book of the words of this song put together with pictures drawn by the children of the Gurindji people.  This was the inspiration for the painting that the children created, depicting the story of Lingiari for the competition.

The exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet and enjoy the creative talents of their children. This adult event costs $10 and includes wine and cheese, a door prize and trivia questions. Families can also view the artwork the next day.
