The Echo, as it is also known, was first published on June 11, 1986. It has a sister paper The Tweed Shire Echo, founded on August 28, 2008.
The original Byron Shire Echo was founded in 1986 following marijuana raids by the NSW Police in the valleys surrounding Mullumbimby. Many people believed that the police were acting aggressively and illegally, and local TV and print media refused to touch the story.
