Police are appealing for public assistance in following an alleged sexual assault at Lismore early on Saturday morning.

At about 4.30am, a 37-year-old woman was walking in the vicinity of Zadoc Street when she was allegedly grabbed from behind by a male and physically and sexually assaulted.

The woman went to Lismore Police Station and was immediately taken to Lismore Base Hospital for treatment.

She gave a statement to police yesterday.

An investigation is underway and police have collected a number of items for forensic examination.

Investigators are appealing for anyone with any information, or who saw any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Zadoc Street around 4.30am on Saturday, to contact Lismore Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
