Reading about Shai Major’s prosecution reminds us again of the litigious attitude of this [Byron Shire] council. I can understand any legal professionals urging a council to prosecute everyone within reach – it’s a nice little earner. But it is not an effective form of conflict resolution – and it is a waste of council funds that could be better spent elsewhere (ie on our shocking roads). And it’s certainly not the will of the people driving this attitude.
We’re about to get a new mayor and general manager – perhaps we can take this refreshing opportunity to direct our legal advice to deliver real justice, not mere punishment.
