A man will face Grafton Local Court next month after being extradited from Queensland on child sexual-assault charges.

The charges relate to the alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy in the Clarence Valley between Friday 28 July and Tuesday 1 August.

Detectives from the NSW Police Force Child Abuse Squad launched an investigation after being advised of the allegations. They subsequently applied for and were granted an arrest warrant for a 33-year-old Queensland man.

The man, from Surfers Paradise, was arrested in Queensland at the weekend and faced Southport Magistrates Court yesterday.

He was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with sexual intercourse with a person aged between 10 and 14, and four counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with a person aged between 10 and 14.

He was refused bail to face Tweed Heads Local Court this afternoon with the matter being put over to Grafton Local Court on 3 September. He will remain in custody.

Police allege the man and the child were known to each other.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
