On Saturday 28 July the Rainbow Region Dragon Boat Club held a special boat-blessing ceremony for its new boat Champion at Lake Ainsworth. The boat was adorned with flowers and blessed by Buddhist monk Ven Pannyavaro from the Bodhi Tree Monastery. Then, in keeping with dragon boating tradition, the dragon was ‘awakened’ in a ceremony during which MP Thomas George, Ballina mayor Cr Phil Silver, former North Coast Dragon Boats coordinator Karen Kiely, and John Mills of Lake Ainsworth Sport and Rec ‘dotted’ the eyes, forehead, tongue, belly and tail of the dragon.
