In a rare show of unity, the federal, state and local government representatives covering the Lismore LGA have called on Telstra to spend $3 million in the city to compensate for the withdrawal of its call centre, which is due to close next month with the loss of more than 100 jobs.
Federal MP Janelle Saffin, Lismore MP Thomas George and mayor Jenny Dowell have drafted a submission to Telstra making the request.
The pollies have asked for money to retrain affected workers and build infrastructure to ‘double or better’ existing broadband access.
The submission also asks the company to leave behind its call-centre hardware when it withdraws from the city so that it could be used to encourage another company move its call centre there.
