Jenny Pandava, Byron Bay

I was shocked to hear at least two speakers at the DM conference, although strongly objecting to the proposed DM bottleshop in the Byron CBD, suggest that DM could move to the industrial estate instead.

As a Sunrise resident, I was not impressed. And this suggestion is not helpful to the young at-risk binge drinkers for at least a few reasons.

Although less accessible, the industrial estate is only 4.6km from the Byron CBD. And, importantly, many of the very large festivals are now located up this end of town at the Belongil Fields campground. During Splendour, thousands of teenagers walked along Bayshore Drive from their camp at North Byron, past the industrial estate through the streets of Sunrise and on their way to the festival site at Belongil Fields.

Very large NYE festivals are also held at Belongil Fields and many more large festivals will be at the North Byron site if the current DA is approved. Need I say a DM in the industrial estate will increase the availability of cheap alcohol to festival-goers. Not a good idea.

For the local community here, there is already one bottle shop on Bayshore Drive with the approved (by council last year) Bayshore Drive Tavern and Bottleshop yet to be built. Too much alcohol. Just say NO to Dan Murphy’s anywhere in Byron!

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. I hope the residents of Sunrise realize that at the moment the DA at council now is for a maximum of 3,000 people, camping and amplified music, once posted, if there are no conditions put onto this site …and the developers put it in as a trial NO section 94 money goes to council, but the biggest thing is the developers will then ask for a section 96 which is an alteration in the DA …..which could see council pass increase numbers much higher …. there was only 17,500 here for Splendour this year, so be aware …the north of the shire is having a trial for 5 years with 35,000 25,000, an 15,000 people, an no section 94. Dan Murphys is not wanted in the shire we already have approx 60 outlets for alcohol in the Shire, find another shire DM
