Jenny Pandava, Byron Bay
I was shocked to hear at least two speakers at the DM conference, although strongly objecting to the proposed DM bottleshop in the Byron CBD, suggest that DM could move to the industrial estate instead.
As a Sunrise resident, I was not impressed. And this suggestion is not helpful to the young at-risk binge drinkers for at least a few reasons.
Although less accessible, the industrial estate is only 4.6km from the Byron CBD. And, importantly, many of the very large festivals are now located up this end of town at the Belongil Fields campground. During Splendour, thousands of teenagers walked along Bayshore Drive from their camp at North Byron, past the industrial estate through the streets of Sunrise and on their way to the festival site at Belongil Fields.
Very large NYE festivals are also held at Belongil Fields and many more large festivals will be at the North Byron site if the current DA is approved. Need I say a DM in the industrial estate will increase the availability of cheap alcohol to festival-goers. Not a good idea.
For the local community here, there is already one bottle shop on Bayshore Drive with the approved (by council last year) Bayshore Drive Tavern and Bottleshop yet to be built. Too much alcohol. Just say NO to Dan Murphy’s anywhere in Byron!
