Australia’s Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes addressed a forum yesterday in Melbourne, held by the Summer Foundation, on the human rights issues of young people in nursing homes.
‘I am firmly of the view that the biggest barrier we face in Australia, as people with disability, is not our disability, is not the lack and inefficient service system that we have, but it’s the attitude barrier,’ Mr Innes said.
In the treatment of people with disability, ‘Society itself tends to be excluding, discriminatory and at best, condescending, and ultimately, disabling.’
