Police are calling for witnesses to a fight in a Yamba street over the weekend, which has left a man in hospital with serious head injuries.

Two groups of men became involved in an argument outside a hotel on The Mainbrace at about 1am on Saturday. Two of the men then started fighting.

Police allege that during the fight a man from one group approached a 27-year-old man from the other group, who was not involved in the fight, and punched him in the face.

The 27-year-old fell to the ground, striking his head on the roadway and knocking him unconscious.

The other group of men fled and police and other emergency services were called.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment of serious head injuries, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/.
