Australia the ‘blessed’ country
That’s what UN climate change chief Christiana Figures said of Australia, owing to its abundant renewable-energy resources when she visited Sydney last week.
We are apparently the envy of the world with many countries keen to improve health and lower carbon emissions not because they want to save the planet but because they believe it’s in their national interest.
A study from the Australian Energy Market Operator shows the feasibility of switching to 100 per cent renewable electricity generation is easily attained by 2030 and with a huge exportable surplus.
The big question is whether we are prepared to demand the transition from a subsidised fossil fuel industry, which would like to keep the status quo, to harnessing renewables, which will achieve cheap unlimited energy.
