Robert Webber, Byron Bay

Mandy Nolan was spot on in her column [and Echonetdaily video] ‘Welcome to Binge School’. Because Byron Bay is a known schoolies destination we get too many half-wits who have no respect for our community, each other or our beautiful and precious environment. The violence and antisocial behaviour that attends this puerile event means we require the services of the Riot Squad, and many police with dogs and on horses. All this in a country town!

And even this was not enough to keep everyone safe, let alone stop the obnoxious behaviour that invades our streets. We should not be expected to accept the so-called party houses, the broken glass, drunks shouting as they walk up our streets after the bars close, and the sense of menace on our streets.

Young people should come to enjoy Byron Bay, if they appreciate what is here. But let’s stop promoting Byron as a destination for schoolies. Let the tents and the volunteers go to the Gold Coast, which is already stuffed.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
