It has been a very successful year for Kingscliff Bowls Club. In the Pennants competition: all our sides performed well with the Division 1 and Division 7 sides winning the District and our other three sides finishing second. The stars of the show were our Division 7 side, which went on to win the Zone and make the Final of the state playoff, just missing the title.
In District Competition we had Kevin Liddington, Vic Lewis, Peter Murphy and Brian Turner reach the final of the Over-60s Fours Championship while Greg Barrack, Russell MacLeay, Trevor Hills and Michael Turner won the Open Fours and went on to win Zone and play in the Final of the State Open Fours. Our teams also performed well in the District Pairs with Ian Taylor and Michael Turner playing Russell McLeay and Greg Barack in an all-Kingscliff Final of the Open Pairs and John Brinsmead and Ray Phipps making the Final of the Reserves. In the District Singles Ian Taylor and Brian Turner won the Open and Over-60s respectively while Ray Phipps played in the final of the Reserves. Our Club Fours Champions of Ken Banks, Greg Barrack, Brian Turner and Michael Turner have gone on to win the District and Zone Finals of the Club Champion of Champions while Michael is in the District Finals of the Singles.
At a local level we have seen increased numbers of men nominating for club championships and the standard has been very high. At the Members Night last Sunday the following champions were acknowledged:
Open Singles – Winner: Michael Turner; Runner-up: Ian Taylor
Open Pairs – Winners: Keith Dawson & Ian Taylor, Runners-up: Greg Barrack & Russell McLeay
Open Triples – Winners: Frank McNamara, Steve Jamieson & Russell McLeay, Runners-up: Brian Turner, Trevor Hills & Michael Turner
Open Fours – Winners: Ken Banks, Greg Barrack, Brian Turner & Michael Turner; Runners-up: Brett Harris, Harry Hockey, Ivan Smith & Kevin Liddington
*** This year has also seen the Men’s club and the main club work together to refurbish the shades and seating around the greens and the playing area looks a treat. Renovations to the club have resulted in the modern bowls office on the ground floor and a spacious new TAB area with an outlook over the greens.
Men’s Christmas Party: This is being held on Saturday 8 December and will consist of bowls followed by a smorgasbord meal and hospitality.
Friday Night Inter-Club Challenge: The final game of this competition was played last Friday night. Kingscliff travelled to Condong and scored a two-shot win. However it wasn’t enough to overtake Cabarita at the top of the ladder. Congratulations to the organisers on a great concept and thanks to ‘Tails’ for his enthusiasm and organisation.
