Gold Coast airport saw a dramatic increase in international passenger numbers last year, with a 31 per cent increase in December over the same period in 2011.
Queensland Airports managing director Dennis Chant credited a concerted marketing effort for generating the increase.
He added that increased airline capacity had allowed passenger numbers to expand.
‘We’ve got a fair slice of Asia covered now and [Gold Coast] has a big slice of catchment into Asia,’ he told ABC local radio this morning.
Even domestic arrivals showed an increase of nearly 10 per cent.
