Wanganui Road was reopened on Friday afternoon but only to authorised vehicles under 3.5 tonnes. The road had been closed since a landslip over the Australia Day long weekend.

Byron Shire Council’s executive manager of community infrastructure, Phil Holloway, said work crews on Friday removed more trees, installed signage and put up additional barricades on the edge of the landslip area.

‘Wanganui Road will continue to be monitored on a daily basis. If any further deterioration is noticed, the road will be closed immediately with little or no notice until a further geotechnical inspection takes place to ensure safety.’

Any resident who notices any further damage to Wanganui Road as a result of rain events should report the damage immediately to 6685 9300 or the after-hours number of 6626 7022.

Mr Holloway thanked the residents for their patience as they waited for the road to be re-opened.

‘We now have a significant number of landslips in the shire as a result of the storm damage caused by ex-cyclone Oswald. They range in severity from soil slipping close to roadways to the immediate risk of total road collapse at Upper Coopers Creek Road.

‘All are being assessed by geotechnical consulting engineers and reported to the Natural Disaster Assistance Scheme to gain access to funding for repair works,’ he said.
