Round 1 of the Billabong Pro Rio at Barra da Tijuca, Rio De Janeiro in Brazil, has been played out and ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson from Coolangatta won his opening heat threading his way through two open barrels to post 7.17 and 6.17 rides, advancing in first place.

Other Aussies to win their heats were Mick Fanning (13.20) and Bede Durbidge (11.27)
