A 66-year-old woman died after her house in Yamba was gutted by fire on Saturday night.
Emergency services responded to reports of a home ablaze on Carrs Drive, Yamba, around 11.30pm and Fire and Rescue NSW crews extinguished it soon after.
A body was found inside the house.
The dead woman is yet to be formally identified, but police believe she lived at the address.
A crime scene was established and examined by forensic officers but at this stage the cause of the fire is unknown.
The Coroner is investigating.
