A Myocum local has been fined $600 after holding an illegal party in Tyagarah Nature Reserve north of Byron Bay two weekends ago.
National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Byron Coast area manager Sue Walker said staff were dismayed to discover that revegetation plantings within the reserve had been destroyed as a result of the illegal party on the night of Saturday 15 June that continued into the Sunday morning.
‘Areas planted with coastal banksias to regenerate damaged vegetation were trampled and destroyed during the illegal party,’ Ms Walker said.
‘While conducting a routine patrol on the Sunday morning, NPWS rangers discovered a male loading equipment into a vehicle who confirmed he was the organiser of the illegal party.
‘People who visit national parks are reminded to show respect for reserves and for others.
‘Large gatherings in parks require a permit as the facilities in most areas are not designed to cater for big groups.
‘As we have seen illegal parties can result in damage and, as in this case, our staff also have had to clean up after the party, removing rubbish and broken bottles from the area.’
