Just a handful of police officers were called on to break up a brawl between 10 people in Goonellabah early yesterday morning in which one man sustained life-threatening injuries.

Police believe a knife and a baseball bat were used in the brawl.

Richmond LAC duty officer Matt Kehoe told Echonetdaily all of the assailants and victims were male but ‘there were some women on the sidelines’.

The fight started at around 5.30am when a 29-year-old man was at home in Eggins Place with a 19-year-old friend.

Two men aged, 53 and 17 came to the property and an argument took place.

The group separated but a short time later a brawl ensued at nearby Churchward Place.

Police were called and found the 29-year-old outside his house with serious head injuries. He was taken to Lismore Base Hospital before being airlifted to the Gold Coast with life-threatening injuries.

A 17-year-old boy received a slash wound to chest.

Inquiries are still continuing as to how the fight started. Police said all those involved in the brawl live in the Goonellabah area.
