Hundreds of Byron Bay residents took part in the town’s gasfield-free declaration day yesterday, joining communities across the Northern Rivers who have already declared themselves against coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and mining. Street surveys conducted recently throughout Byron Bay showed that a staggering 98.6 per cent of the population want the town gasfield-free. Mayor Simon Richardson, who received the declarations, said the event sends a message to political and economic leaders that ‘it’s time to grow up’ and embrace renewable energy and ‘respect the planet and ourselves’.
