Byron Bay Men

Rain upset bowls last week but the keener bowlers persisted between the showers on Thursday with the first round of the Club Pairs Championships played. There were wins to Greg Daniels and Paul Clark, Mark Barry and Gavin McPhail & Dick Aldridge and Peter Lofts.

Our self selected pairs was also played with the rain clearing. The winners this week were Mark Barry and Gavin McPhail with runners-up the Lennox boys, Barney and Mouse. The meat tray was won by Mark Barry.

Rain was still making bowls uncomfortable but we have managed a few gamers regardless.

Tuesdays social bowls results were a win to Gavin McPhail and runner-up Bob Lewis.

Thursdays self selected pairs winners this week was the ‘triples’ rink of Dick Aldridge, Bev Gawned and Werner Borkhardt, runners-up Ray Henderson and Bob Lewis, meat tray won by Ray Henderson and jackpot not won now $60.

One game of the Men’s Pairs Championship was played on Saturday with a win to Phil Boyd and Jeff Fleming (sub for Syl Reid) against Craig Johnson and Steve Hammond.

Vic defeated Ron McWaters 31 – 22 in the Semi-final of the Senior Singles on Saturday and backed that up with a 31 – 22 win over Terry McFadden in the Final on Sunday. This was a game in which Vic dominated early but had to fight hard to withstand a strong come back from Terry before again asserting his dominance. The Open Singles between Kris Lehfeldt and Tails turned out to be a marathon, taking 4 hours to complete. Kris held the lead for the first two and a half hours until Tails picked up a couple of multiples. And grabbed a 21 – 20 lead. From there, the lead changed hands continuously with Tails picking up two shots to level at 30 – 30 and then scored the winning shot on the next end.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
