Pottsville Men

Diggers Day at Pottsville Bowls Club on Wednesday October 16 was a grand affair.  The day commenced with the raising of the flag in a ceremony conducted by Pottsville R.S.L. Sub Branch President, John Hawes.  It was then out onto the greens for the Diggers Day Tournament.

With a compliment of 24 teams entered, the competition was quite fierce as the contestants vied for the prestigious RSL perpetual Trophy and a total of $1000 prize money being offered.

Round One of the competition determined the teams to compete in the sectional play in Round Two (winners v. winners, losers v. losers).  John Turner (Skip) with team mates Terry Fuller and Mick Morgan (Cabarita) were the overall winners taking home the money AND the all important Trophy.  Jim Banks (Skip) with Steve Waygood and Brian Brown (Pottsville) were the Runners-up. Winners of the losers were Doug Moir (Skip)  and Ron Appleton (Pottsville) with Mick Mesic (Kingscliff).  Al Bennett (Skip), Alan Durrington and Rob Bryant (Pottsville) were the Runners-up.  Social winners on the day were Ivor Sullivan (Pottsville), Geoff Ramage (Ipswich United) and Bill Green (Wellington).

A great roll up for a great event!  President Jim Field would like to thank and congratulate all contestants in this event and looks forward to see you all again next year.

October 19:  Mens Pairs – Winners today were Mike Ross and Gary Roots. Runners-up were Bert Moore and Steve Waygood.  Championship Mixed Pairs Semi-final – Damien and Mav Sparkes defeated Kev Hall and Trish Pollard.   Well done, everyone.

Pottsville Women

October 17:  Social Bowls – Great to see a large compliment of bowlers out on the greens.  Winners (hws) were the two Carols – Caryl Parker and Carol Smith.  Lucky numbers were won by our little Irish leprechaun, Georgie Moore.  Raffles donated by Aileen Swift were won by Catriona Moir and Pam Thorburn.  Thank you Aileen. Congratulations everyone.

October 18:  Overcast skies and morning misty showers didn’t deter our Potty Pairs contestants from coming along for a great afternoon of bowls.  Their bravery was rewarded with a lovely fine afternoon.  The tied score of 20 pts between two teams required a count back to determine the winners – Mike and Michelle Van Runt with Pam Thorburn and Gary Roots being the runners up.  John Buckley was the Lucky Numbers winner but wife, Doreen, claimed the money as she had bought the ticket. Well done everyone.

October 19:  State Singles Championships at Tuncurry.  Congratulations to Coral Withers who made it through to the Semi Finals with superb bowling prowess. In a fiercely contested semi Coral was unlucky not to reel in her opposition and just missed out on a berth in the final by a mere 3 shots. Well done, Coral,  and again congratulations on an extremely fine performance.

*** Diary Notes:  October 26 – Friday Arvo Potty Pairs.  1 pm start of play. Entry sheet on Club notice board or phone Coral Withers 0431 729 623.  The jackpot is still increasing and should add up to a nice collect when drawn on 16 November.

November 4 – District President’s, Secretaries’ and Treasurer’s Day at Pottsville.  Trust you have entered your teams.

November 18 – Pottsville Pelican Fours.  $80 p/team (all inclusive). M/tea 8.30 am.  3 games 11 ends.  Entries to Secretary, Doreen Buckley please.  A great day is assured, so come along and enjoy the company as well as the bowls.

Social bowls are on Thursdays 9 am.  Names to be in by 8.30 am please.  Visitors welcome.  Coaching is free to new bowlers as well as members wishing to freshen up their game. Please phone the Club on 6676 1077, follow the prompts, and leave a message and contact number.

A note from the editorial team

Some of The Echo’s editorial team: journalists Paul Bibby and Aslan Shand, editor Hans Lovejoy, photographer Jeff Dawson and Mandy Nolan

The Echo has never underestimated the intelligence and passion of its readers. In a world of corporate banality and predictability, The Echo has worked hard for more than 30 years to help keep Byron and the north coast unique with quality local journalism and creative ideas. We think this area needs more voices, reasoned analysis and ideas than just those provided by News Corp, lifestyle mags, Facebook groups and corporate newsletters.

The Echo is one hundred per cent locally owned and one hundred per cent independent. As you have probably gathered from what is happening in the media industry, it is not cheap to produce a weekly newspaper and a daily online news service of any quality.

We have always relied entirely on advertising to fund our operations, but often loyal readers who value our local, independent journalism have asked how they could help ensure our survival.

Any support you can provide to The Echo will make an enormous difference. You can make a one-off contribution or a monthly one. With your help, we can continue to support a better informed local community and a healthier democracy for another 30 years.”
