Ten-year-old Sebastian Bungate had an awesome season of surfing during the rejuvenated New Brighton Boardriders competition despite having a broken ankle and missing two of the rounds of the competition.
After quite a few ‘lay’ years the Newy Crew were reborn by popular demand, bigger and stronger than ever in June this year.
The New Brighton Boardriders have a long history of talented surfers emerging from the club, some of whom have gone on to compete professionally.
Sebastian promises to be a future champ after his 2013 effort, which saw him win third place and Most Improved Surfer in his division at the presentation that was held on the New Brighton sports oval on Sunday afternoon.
Interestingly, the first year back in the surf saw the crew attract a lot of under-12 girls to the comp, a sure sign that women are enjoying the sport more than ever before.
If you’re looking for fun or wanting to develop your surfing skills, the Boardriders welcome all levels of surfers. They have Men’s and Women’s divisions for all ages.
Comps are held on the third Sunday of each month. For more information look for them on Facebook for details about the 2014 season.
