Mandy Nolan’s Soapbox: Why Being Seen is Beautiful

There is something profound about being seen. Being accepted and loved for exactly who you are. It’s life changing. It’s simple. It’s transformative. But some people don’t get to experience this. Nearly half of transgender Australians have attempted suicide. That data tells the very real impact of discrimination, stigma and lack of access to gender-affirming surgery. I write this as a woman who was born a woman, who identifies as a woman. I’ll admit, that even in that gender role, that fits within the societal binary, I’ve had my own challenges.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Mungo as usual your “satirical bent” has substance behind the appearance of mere verbiage. Our society is at risk from the substantial collection of “god botherers”who are in decision making positions within government -obviously not an usual situation in any mix of parliamentarians of either persuasion. But the current mix is fiercely wedded to doctrines that may may do harm to our society; the most obvious is Climate Change – the sheer determination to ignore science will do us all harm, especially our grandchildren Their beliefs in “god and his wisdom” are in reality a return to the toxic Howard years and the dark ages. Many sections of our society will suffer -the massive apathy which seems to infect mainstream society will not know what is happening until it affects them personally. Then they will not be relaxed. It is a very sad state of affairs Gordon Gecko is alive and well and we are indeed open for business -god help us all as we see everything “privatized and sold off. Economic efficiency is the mantra but is it effective?

  2. Education Gonski, Abbott Outski, Turnbull Inski!

    Mungo,
as usual, I feel you are correct: I think the Devil has taken Tony, & God will want to correct this: hopefully very soon! Perhaps Tony will be consumed by the fires of Coal Seam Gas, or the message that might have saved him was delayed in the copper wires of his version of the internet….
I personally think the boats will sink Tony. How long will the Indonesians take having people illegally transported on Orange boats to their shore? What happens if some started in Siri Lanka? I can envisage the International Court investigating the illegal dumping of boat people in Indonesia, as well as the human rights issues?

    Bring it on!
    regards Doug
