A need to march in March

Latest News

Cadwallader, Lyon and Krieg most likely new Far North Coast mayors

With most of the votes cast, and counting over until tomorrow, the New South Wales Electoral Commission stats would suggest that there are three clear winners of the mayoral contests in Ballina, Byron and Lismore Shires.

Mandy Nolan’s Soapbox: Crossing Over

I miss travelling. I miss the thrill of going somewhere new. The last few years feels like we’ve had no adventures. No interesting and foreign lands to explore.  It’s been all about staying at home. Thanks to Annastacia Palaszczuk, going to Queensland feels a bit like going overseas. I’ve had to cross the border for work a few times lately.

I, like many others, feel sickened by the extreme right turn this government has taken on our behalf. Asylum seekers mistreated. Trade unions investigated. ‘Too many forests are locked up’ we are told by our great intellectual light T Abbott.

Support for alternative energies or climate action is dropped off the agenda. The biggest coalmine in the southern hemisphere has been approved instead, the sludge ending up 40km from the Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Schools are told to focus on western values, you know, the Greeks, Romans, English and Americans, the real civilisations. The national broadcaster is under attack and urged to be more patriotic. Flags fly everywhere. It’s all ‘for the common good’, we are told.

We are lied to, controlled, robbed. We are insignificant. Bigger things are planned for us. Let’s love each other while it lasts. But let your voice be heard. It is needed. Join the march on March 16.

Carl Cleves, Byron Bay

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Not only this (feral – sorry – opportunistic typo -) Federal Govt. Go to http://www.llsclassaction to see what a dictatorial, dare I say fascist, NSW Govt we NSW Welshmen and women have had from both the Labo(U)r Party and the LNP over past decades.
