Triple treat for Brunswick Guys David Croft (Skip), Don Proudlock and Denis Turnbull.

Sunday March 2:  The District Triples Championships, this year, attracted really fine top line bowlers to the competition.  As the teams went through their rounds, many games went down to the wire.  Bowling displays were quite awesome, much to the delight of spectators.

At Kingscliff the final of the Open Triples between T. Makin (Ocean Shores) and M. Turner (Kingsclifff) was a super game. Turner acquired his spot in the final by way of a forfeit from I. Taylor (Kingscliff).  Michael opened the score card to begin with.  Troy’s team were a bit slow out of the blocks but they eventually fired up by the ninth end.  Collecting several multiples, they were able to match the opposition and carried on take over the leadership.  Congratulations to Troy Makin (Skip), Graeme Condie and Danny Taylor, winners of this event and the runners-up Michael Turner, Russell McMcLeay and Damon Crompton in a game that was a joy to witness.

Cudgen Leagues Club was the place to be for the Reserve Triples. Although games were hard and close in this event D. Croft (Brunswick Heads) and B. Henry (Cabarita) were able to conquer all before them in the rounds to take them through to the final.  Cabarita were first off the mark with scoring, but it only took a few more ends for Brunswick to catch up.

Coming into the sixteen end the score was 17-9 in favour of David.  Even though the Caba boys fought on gallantly, they were unable to match the figures as the Brunswick team was on fire plundering with multiples to take the game.  Congratulations to David Croft (Skip), Don Proudlock and Denis Turnbull, this year’s Reserve champions and runners-up Barry Henry (Skip), Barry White and David Day.  One heck of a game to see.

Ocean Shores was the venue for the District Over 60’s Triples but was rescheduled to by played at Cabarita as two teams from that club were to contest the final. The rounds leading up to the final produced some great bowling displays again with close scoring overall. Teams skipped by Mark Howarde and John Turner, respectively, descended onto the greens to do battle.  Coming into the eleventh end the teams were on an even keel.  Howarde’s team then forged ahead, 1 shot at a time, to get in front.  A comeback from John’s team  in the nineteenth end progressed to the end of the game, but too late, with only 2 shots the difference, Howarde was able to hold on and take the title.Congratulations to Mark Howards (Skip), Barry Sheppard and Mick Morgan and the runners-up John Turner Skip), Mario Azzopardi, and Bill Creedon.  Great game, fellas.

A big thank you to host clubs, umpires and controlling bodies for their time and effort that ensured the smooth running of these events.

The Echo has never underestimated the intelligence and passion of its readers. In a world of corporate banality and predictability, The Echo has worked hard for more than 30 years to help keep Byron and the north coast unique with quality local journalism and creative ideas. We think this area needs more voices, reasoned analysis and ideas than just those provided by News Corp, lifestyle mags, Facebook groups and corporate newsletters.

The Echo is one hundred per cent locally owned and one hundred per cent independent. As you have probably gathered from what is happening in the media industry, it is not cheap to produce a weekly newspaper and a daily online news service of any quality.

We have always relied entirely on advertising to fund our operations, but often loyal readers who value our local, independent journalism have asked how they could help ensure our survival.

Any support you can provide to The Echo will make an enormous difference. You can make a one-off contribution or a monthly one. With your help, we can continue to support a better informed local community and a healthier democracy for another 30 years.”
