Ever dreamt of having a radioactive waste dump in your backyard?
The federal government is considering allowing landowners nationwide to put their hand up to house Australia’s radioactive waste management facility.
Nominations for a volunteer site are open to Aboriginal land councils in the Northern Territory under the National Radioactive Waste Management Act 2012.
But a nationwide process could be opened.
If it is, landowners in all states and territories will be able to volunteer a site, which will be chosen only if it can fulfil strict environmental requirements.
Interested parties have until November 10 to comment on the proposal. For more information: https://consult.industry.gov.au.
