Interview with Jean Kittson

Comedian, writer, and social commentator Jean Kittson has the ability to distil complex ideas into commonsense. Unauthorised dwelling capital of the world!

Could Main Arm’s title as the Unauthorised Dwelling Capital of the World be under threat?

Following last week’s events in Paris there is a cartoon which is crying out to be drawn. Unfortunately I can’t draw to save my life, so I’ll describe it instead.

The scene is Auckland Harbour. At the dockside is not a ship but just the top of a mast and some bits of floating wreckage.

At the masthead flies the Greenpeace flag and perhaps the name Rainbow Warrior is written on one of the bits of flotsam.

Above all this on the dock stands the French president proclaiming to the world his government’s support for freedom of speech and opposition to terrorism.

I wonder if the surviving journalists at Charlie Hebdo would print such a cartoon in their magazine.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Obviously Michael you did not do much recherché on Charlie Hebdo news paper. At the time of the Rainbow warrior affaire no French poly or president where spare by there cartoonists. But I like your vision you will make a great cartoonist…get you pencil and practice.
