Byron Bay woman dies from crash injuries

A 29-year-old Byron Bay woman has died as a result of injuries she received in a single-vehicle accident near Byron Bay late on Tuesday night.

The woman has been named as Alex Ryder, who worked as a waitress at Newrybar’s Harvest Cafe, which was closed yesterday.

AAP reported that Alex had been taking a drive with her best friend in a Honda Accord and standing up through the car’s sun roof when it ran off the road at Skinners Shoot and crashed into trees.

She received horrific injuries and taken by ambulance to Byron Bay Hospital in a critical condition before being airlifted by the Westpac Lifesaver rescue helicopter to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where she died around 12.30pm yesterday (Thursday).

The 22-year-old driver, an Alstonville woman, was taken to Byron Bay Hospital where she was released soon after being assessed with no serious injuries. Mandatory blood and urine tests were also conducted and police are still waiting for the results.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

  1. This is terribly devastating news. I feel for the family of that young girl. I hope that people will learn that sunroofs are not toys and merely for the purpose of the passengers to view the sky. Sympathy goes out to family and driver who will have to live with this devastation for the rest of her life.

    What an unnecessary tragedy…. the stupid ego is let wild just leave families and others behind in agony of such lost… I feel so sorry for her family and friends.. such an unexpected lost of life…. I hope people do not attempt this just for the sake of having fun whilst driving.. it also put other people at risk…
