The limp protestations of Lismore Nationals MP Thomas George over the closure of the birthing service at Murwillumbah Hospital are a significant disappointment.
Mr George has previously claimed credit for ‘saving’ the hospital’s children’s ward while actually closing it on weekends. Now he claims to be powerless to intervene in the closure of the birthing service. How convenient.
The complete absence of Tweed MP Geoff Provest from the debate is telling. Thousands of people in the Tweed electorate rely on the services at Murwillumbah Hospital.
Most damning of all is the revelation that this closure has been brewing since December, a full three months before the State Election, and neither Mr Provest nor Mr George revealed this to voters.
It beggars belief that these two gentlemen could be so adept at showing up for hospital photo opportunities at a moment’s notice, but didn’t know the closure of the birthing unit was coming.
