An email sent by mistake has revealed the level of disdain the chair of Rous Water has for anti-fluoride crusaders.

Rous Water chair Ballina councillor Sue Meehan.
Rous Water chair Ballina councillor Sue Meehan.

Rous Water chair Sue Meehan inadvertently copied Lismore’s Greens councillor Vanessa Ekins into a message intended for Rous general manager Kyme Lavelle.

The email was in response to Cr Ekin’s intention to move a motion at the next meeting of Rous Council calling for the suspension of fluoridation until the National Health and Medical Council had completed a review into reducing concentrations of fluoride.

‘Kyme this is just bluff and bluster from the lips of our sworn enemy of fluoride…Do not spend any money complying with Vanessa’s BS!!!!
I am SO over her and the whole bunch of them!!! Sue,’ the email said.

Cr Ekins has been a strong opponent of fluoride since Rous Water first mooted adding it to the region’s water supply, under the direction of the NSW Health Department.

Echonetdaily has contacted Cr Sue Meehan for comment on the email.

Meanwhile, Cr Ekins has also lodged a notice of motion for tonight’s Lismore City Council meeting, calling for a community poll on the issue.

‘Just as CSG has ignited community discussion about clean waterways and local control over activities that may impact our environment and health, so has the addition of fluoride to our water supply,’ her motion says.

‘Even in the council chamber opinions on fluoridation are divided.

‘Our community has never been adequately consulted on the question of fluoridation and this shows complete disrespect for our own consultation policies.

‘I urge councillors to consider conducting a poll along the same lines as the CSG poll, with the question formulated and advertised in the same manner.’

Members of the Fluoride Free Northern Rivers group are expected to attend, and spokesperson Leisa Webb will give a five-minute address to the council.

The council meets at 6pm in the chambers in Goonellabah.

  1. I’m sure you are a very nice person Sue but Cr Ekins is trying to give everyone the choice about fluoride. Diagnosed 8yrs ago with thyroid disease I can not consume fluoridated water and need to avoid physical exposure to it and avoid any product manufactured or contains fluoride (including arsenic, cadmium and lead according to the Australian Drinking Water Standards). Since avoiding fluoridated water my thyroid hormone levels returned to the normal range but it is a constant battle for me day to day. Furthermore it has cost us in excess of $10,000 to have our own rainwater tanks, filters and plumbing into our house, totally bizarre having to do this in wonderful country as Australia. The answer is incredibly simple, leave the poisons out of the public water supply and you and others who believe it’s good for you can add as much of it as you wish to your own glass of water. Solution solved for everyone! Why do some people find this so difficult to understand?

    • Because you have a problem , Why does everybody else have to change their way of life to suit you, That is pretty selfish. Its the same as if you do not like driving you want everybody else to stop too This is the real world ,it wont happen

      • Excuse me, not EVERYBODY ELSE – I too am against enforced fluoridation of OUR water. If YOU want fluoride, YOU put it in your water. Every citizen should have a choice about what chemicals they ingest, and if you got your head out of your X you would find the numbers in support of NO FLUORIDE is growing and growing as people become aware of the side effects. Individual dental health is up to the individual – surely we are not so stupid that we require governing bodies to force us to ingest a chemical purported to improve out dental health. Australia is NOT a third world country.

  2. I bet Sue Meehan hasn’t read a single study into fluoride. The emails that i’ve sent her on this issue have gone unanswered. I agree with Lesley, it’s about choice. Those who think that regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste isn’t enough can add more of it into their diet. Those who need to avoid fluoride shouldn’t have to spend thousands of dollars buying filters and rainwater tanks. What do those do who are renting? To subject the whole community to it under the premise of improving 3-6 year old’s teeth is a backward step for our region. To ridicule and dismiss those with a different view does her no credit.

    • Justice Hansen made this argument in his recent judgment on the fluoridation issue [Hansen 2014] South Taranaki court case
“Providing it does not have consequences for public health, a person has the right to make even the poorest decisions in respect of their own health. But where the state, either directly or through local government, employs public health interventions, the right is not engaged. Were it otherwise, the individuals right to refuse would become the individuals right to decide outcomes for others. It would give any person a right of veto over public health measures, which it is not only the right, but, often the responsibility of local authorities to deliver”

  3. “Where is the physician who will impose a lifelong prescription for an untested potentially toxic substance (fluoride), without proven clinical benefit, on a patient he/she has never met, interviewed or examined?”

“Such dubious behavior would extract appropriate censure from the licensing authority of the physician involved, on the basis that it is unscientific, unscrupulous, unethical, and therefore unacceptable.”

“Whether or not it is safe to consume fluorosilicic acid is not a dental issue . it is out of the scope of dentistry. Dentists are not credentialed and do not have the general medical background to make this advisement. The major health damage is to the
bones, the brain, the thyroid, the kidneys, etc. all organs outside the dental practice.”

    • Well we could ask you the same question Why does the Natural Health coalition, That supports the anti fluoride /vaccine network sell “prescription for an untested potentially toxic substance without proven clinical benefit, on a patient he/she has never met, interviewed or examined?”

“Such dubious behavior would extract appropriate censure from the licensing authority of the physician involved, on the basis that it is unscientific, unscrupulous, unethical, and therefore unacceptable.”

But when the regulatory bodies tried to impose independent testing and regulation your lot spent a fortune taking it to court to stop it Funny that, and some other comments mention liars , bullies and cowards Seems a bit close to home when you look at the facts

      Press Release: Water New Zealand

Water New Zealand welcomes court decision to reject appeal by fluoride opponents

Water New Zealand has welcomed the decision by Justice Kos in the High Court (4 Sept) to reject an appeal by opponents of water fluoridation.

“This is the fourth time in two years that opponents of public water fluoridation have lost cases in the courts,” says John Pfahlert, CEO of Water New Zealand.

Lobby organisation, New Health, had been seeking to overturn Government regulations specifying that fluoridating agents used for the fluoridation of drinking water are not medicines made for the purposes of the Medicines Act.

  4. Show me a Forced Fluoridation Promoter, and I will show you a Bully, a Liar and a Coward.
A Bully that wants to unfairly force an accumulating toxin into your water, food and beverages without your consent, for the rest of your life.
A Liar who spouts lies, saying zero harm results from forced fluoridation, or lies by omission and ignores facts.
A Coward with no fortitude to tell the public the exact truth of what they put in the water supply, and the harms that can come from ingesting fluoride, and no guts to have serious public debates and information Q and A sessions.
‪#‎fluoridation‬ is not wanted. ‪#‎fluoride‬ don’t swallow it, or the lies.

  5. No amount of fluoride in the water will save the teeth of kids
who are raised on fizzy soft drinks and lollies.

All fluoride does is make tooth enamel more brittle. It does not prevent
tooth decay – it only defers treatment by masking on-going decay
in the dentine which turns the inside of the tooth into mush, making
remedial treatment more difficult, more time consuming and more
expensive. Thus there is no benefit to the individual or the community.

Further to that, the action of fluoride is topical – not systemic. Only the
water that contacts teeth has any effect on the teeth – the rest is just
an unwanted poison that the body can well do without.

Brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste is the easy option for those who
want fluoride – even easier than finding toothpaste without fluoride in it.

There is no “nanny” option for people who will not look after their own
dental hygiene – putting fluoride in the water won’t help these people –
it just makes problems for people who aware enough to know that fluoride
and the other toxins in this reclassified industrial waste is not good for
    their health.

There is no excuse for the willfully ignorant. There is a huge body of research
that confirms the undesirable effects of fluoride – which is why so many
countries that have a more enlightened view will not fluoridate their water.

  6. I think Ms Meehan needs to get off her lazy conservative narrow minded toots and do some research before passing ignorant comments along about those who have done their homework. Clearly she lives in a blissful ignorant state, and behaves as though she herself has consumed too much fluoride. Nothing like dumbing down the masses!

  7. How rude was Sue Meehan! Who would want someone who behaves so rudely representing them on Council? She should be ashamed of herself. I’m definitely ashamed for her. She might have a different opinion to Vanessa and that’s ok. But it’s her responsibility to know how to treat others with respect.

There’s a lot of information that backs up both sides of the argument. Here’s an article from the English Telegraph a few months ago that seems to be on the side of the anti-fluoride lot:
