Ballina Shire Council will call on the NSW government to declare the northern rivers a coal seam gas exclusion zone.

The decision follows a notice of motion from Cr Jeff Johnson, which resulted in an 8-2 vote of support.

As a result, the council will \will now write to the NSW premier Mike Baird, the Minister for Planning and Environment, and the Minister for Trade and Industry.

‘The recent release of the NSW Draft North Coast Plan has reignited the CSG debate in the Northern Rivers due to it mention of the ‘potential’ for CSG and unconvential gas mining in the Northern Rivers’,  Cr Johnson said in support of his motion.

‘The report goes on to promote the government’s NSW Gas Plan which establishes a ‘clear strategic framework to deliver world’s best-practice standards and regulation for the coal seam gas industry’.

‘This position is at odds with the overwhelming majority of northern rivers residents who have made it quite clear that they oppose coal seam gas development in our region’.

‘Instead of promoting the ‘potential’ for CSG in our region, the government needs to support the communities clearly expressed position and declare the northern rivers as a CSG/unconventional gas exclusion zone like it has for other regions.

‘The NSW Government made a commitment to a CSG free northern rivers before the last election and it’s time that our region was declared an exclusion zone and all references to the future exploitation of the Clarence-Moreton Basin Coal seam in the North Coast Regional Plan be removed’.
