Youth crime increase across Ballina, Tweed and Byron needs community engagement

Ballina has seen two meetings this month on the increase of youth crime and there has also been increasing reports of youth crime in some areas of the Tweed and Byron Shires. 

Police have charged a 32-year-old man over an assault of his 54-year-old father in Byron Bay on Saturday after the older man was found lying unconscious in the middle of the road .

About 10.35pm on Saturday  (May 28), police received numerous ‘000’ calls about a male who was fighting people at Milton Street, Byron Bay.

Upon arrival, police located a group of people there, and a 54 year old man lying unconscious on the road. Police arrested a 32 year old man from Beenleigh, Queensland,  the son of the victim.

The victim was transported directly to Gold Coast University Hospital by ambulance due to concerns about a serious head injury. Fortunately, scans have revealed no serious injury and the victim was later released from hospital.

The 32 year old man was charged at Byron Bay Police Station for Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm (Domestic Violence Related), Common Assault (Domestic Violence Related), and Affray. He was served an Apprehended Violence Order, and given conditional bail to appear at Byron Bay Local Court on the 9 June 2016.

Police have spoken with a number of witnesses over the incident. If any member of the public saw the incident they are encouraged to contact Byron Bay Police or Crimestoppers.
