NSW public schools to strike December 7

The president of the NSW Teachers Federation announced on Saturday morning that NSW public school teachers and principals will go on strike one day next week.

Peter Olson, Goonengerry.

The icy padlock, on the frozen cage, holding the methane monster, is now broken: the methane monster is a nightmare much worse than global nuclear war.

The arctic permafrost is now melting and the frozen Arctic sea floor has already thawed to a depth of 200 feet, in some places.

This vast layer of ice has kept trapped, thousands of billions of tons of ancient carbon: humans produce just 39 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year. Much of this trapped, frozen carbon is released as methane, a gas far stronger than CO2 in its warming effect; so the Arctic methane can easily cause much more global warming than humans do. It’s called runaway global warming.

So much methane is now being released from thawing permafrost, that the ground in Siberia is literally opening up and exploding, as the trapped methane escapes and kilometre wide plumes of methane bubbles can be seen rising from the arctic sea.

Historically when this methane monster has been released, as in the Permian Extinction,it has exterminated virtually all life on earth.

  1. Sorry misquoted David Attenborough

The environmental problems facing this planet are significant and I personally feel much greater than what people realize. Unfortunately, I feel we focus our efforts on blame rather than understanding the root cause. Since the industrial revolution we have made great advances in energy efficient, yet pollution is increasing, fish stocks decreasing, desertification, deforestation etc. As an engineer I have witness massive improvements in energy efficiency, reduction in particulates, Sulphur etc. So what’s the root cause?
My hypothesis is that engineering advances are being out-stripped by population growth. The planets population has doubled since the 1980’s to 7 Billion people. So I will leave you with a quote from Sir David Attenborough “We are a plague on the Earth”

  2. Absolutely right! Lack of population. Control is the root cause of all the other serious problems this world faces, global warming, pandemic disease development threats, food shortage, oil and coal overuse, war and the continuing refugee crisis, etc. We need population control and education, not wearing religions trying to breed more soldiers to defend their power block. The world is still producing 100Million EXTRA people every year, and basting that we are feeding 30million more per year. What happens to the 70 million extras very year that are starving, frustrated, angrily etc. War and refugees is now a continuum until we learn to control and educate our endemic species (not likely when our politics is designed to protect the rich and exploit the poor).

  3. Population control, always the answer. Then start by killing yourselves first. So tired of the same old eugenic rhetoric over the last 30 years … “help we are going to die! So kill of everyone but the privileged cognoscenti like me!” How about dealing with solutions to the real problem: fossil fuels that are setting off this whole chain of events: co2, methane, and we all know the rest. Selfish little brats.

    • Why do you (and so many who deny the problem) leap straight to “kill of (sic) everyone”? Talk about a leap of illogic. No one has ever said we should start killing off the population. Yet it is true that the root cause of every single one of our major problems – loss of habitat, pollution, energy production, lack of access to clean water, global warming, species extinctions – are due to the simple fact that there are too many people consuming limited resources on a small planet. So how do we fix that? Not by mass murder, obviously. The logical solution is voluntary reduction – promoted through education and incentives – in the size of families, to below the replacement rate for the existing population. The population then gradually declines through natural attrition until we arrive at a sustainable level.

As in most things, checking the emotions, engaging the brain, researching the issues and sticking to logic, grounded in ethics, leads to reasonable solutions. There now, is that so hard?
