Clarification is needed over Byron Shire Council’s proposed renaming of seven laneways in Brunswick Heads.
Council’s exhibited names are a ‘conversation starter’ only. They have been pulled at random from an overarching street directory register.
Given the subsequent interest in the issue, council has given an extension of time until 26 May for submissions.
A report will go to council in June for decision-making. Here is an opportunity to honour the memory of people, both European and Aboriginal, of Brunswick Heads, keeping in mind that names of streets and laneways already in the shire cannot be duplicated.

Can we make submissions for suggestions of names or has that already been done??
What a sad thing to do. Street names are part of our history and the names of our youth become part of us. Not everyone comes from a city somewhere – some people did actually grow up in the Byron Shire. By all means draw on the names that are important to us now for new streets – we could have Whale-watch for example or Rainbow Warrior Lane if you must. I remember playing in those lanes with their funny names – please leave them be..
