Landholders in the north west of the Lismore local government area are being invited to take part in a project aimed at improving koala habitat.

The landholders will be assisted to manage, enhance and protect biodiversity on their properties as part of the ongoing Rural Landholder Initiative, which is a key part of Lismore City Council’s biodiversity management strategy.

The council is calling for expressions of interest from property owners in the Nimbin, Stoney Chute, Blue Knob, Georgica, Mountain Top and Terania Creek areas.

Council’s Environmental Strategies Officer Angie Brace said the council wanted to hear from landowners in koala corridors, or who have evidence of resident koalas.

‘We are offering people in the north west of the LGA the chance to improve habitat for local koalas by planting trees on their property or by having work done in areas where weeds are restricting the ability for koalas to access food trees,’ Ms Angie Brace said.

‘Doing this targeted tree planting and weed removal allows us to link up existing habitat and create corridors for the local koala population.’

Successful landholders will have koala habitat on their property improved through work undertaken by contractors that would be supported by a Green Army team made up of 10 participants and one qualified team leader.

The Green Army is a six-month program for 17-24 year olds to train and work in the environment.

For more information phone 1300 87 83 87 or to complete an expression of interest, visit www.lismore.nsw.gov.au.

Applications close at 4pm on Wednesday, 5 October.

  1. I wonder if any of these landholders will be advised that if they have dogs running free on their property there is no point in planting koala trees or expecting koalas to survive there? What is the point of attracting koalas to their death?
