A 78-year-old woman has forced a man out of her unit after she woke to him allegedly sexually assaulting her in Tweed Heads.

The 27-year-old broke into the Tweed Heads unit early on Sunday morning, assaulted the woman and stole jewellery on his way out, police allege.

Police from Tweed Heads Local Area Command were alerted to the incident and commenced investigations.

About 10.30am detectives attended a unit on Kennedy Drive yesterday and arrested a 27-year-old man.

He is due to face Byron Bay Local Court today (Thursday) charged with offences including aggravated break-and-enter, sexual assault and stealing.
