A 40-year-old man is being charged with assault after allegedly attacking a 77-year-old man in Goonellabah this morning.

The elderly man was working in his garden on Ballina Road about 6.50am this morning when the younger man ran at him and pushed him to the ground in what police described as an unprovoked attack.

As a result the 77-year-old has  a large bump to his right arm and soreness to his ribs and back. The victim did not know the alleged offender.

Lismore police attended soon after and chased the 40-year-old through an apartment complex on Fischer Street.

Police caught the man at the rear of an apartment where he was placed under arrest.

The 40-year-old is currently at Lismore police station and in the process of being charged with Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm and Assault.
